Three times el Búho Speaks
Live @ the Poesía.en.Voz.Alta.07 Festival, Casa del Lago UNAM, Chapultepec, Mexico City
This piece is written in the voice of a leader of the Mexican student movement of 1968, known as “El Búho.”
The three-part poem describes the before, during and after of the Tlatelolco massacre of October 2, 1968. That night, hundreds of students, workers, and families withered under the bullets of the Mexican army, which had been ordered to suppress the movement ahead of the coming Olympic Games.

Sonidero Verbobala Soundsystem
A DJ/VJ project built on the traditions of the sonideros of Monterrey, Mexico and early Jamaican soundsystems, Verbobala can fill any space and any event with global rhythms from the underground. 808 beats under roots cumbia, Balkan horns blasting over dub, electronic music and field recordings from three continents; all punctuated by Spanglish MC’s.
Any tempo, anytime: world music isn’t a genre. It’s what we sound like when the borders slip away, on the way to a danceparty at dawn.
“Barrio Linguistics” Demo
An interactive video installation by Verbobala. Barrio Linguistics is an exploration of nomadic Spanish found in the linguistic landscape of Spanish Harlem, New York City through interactive video installation. Makes use of photography, animation, poetry, video projection and electroacoutic audio to incite dialog about the role of language and advertising in contemporary society. The piece is an experimental documentary of the linguistics of south-north migration and the changing face of urban semiotics.
The piece was created by sampling all publicly viewable Spanish language text within a five block radius in Spanish Harlem. Later, a poem was written using exclusively this vocabulary.
In the installation, the order of the videopoem is dictated by the user.
“Border Remixeado” demo
A theatrical performance made up of a series of short pieces dealing with the Sonoran desert, Spanglish, immigration, Mexico and modern identity. 45 min.
