Three times el Búho Speaks
From “Border Remixeado,” live @ the Poesía.en.Voz.Alta.07 Festival, Casa del Lago UNAM, Chapultepec, Mexico City
This piece is written in the voice of a leader of the Mexican student movement of 1968, known as “El Búho.”
The three-part poem describes the before, during and after of the Tlatelolco massacre of October 2, 1968. That night, hundreds of students, workers, and families withered under the bullets of the Mexican army, which had been ordered to suppress the movement ahead of the coming Olympic Games.
For more information on the event, check Wikipedia, or better yet, the book “Massacre in Mexico” by Elena Poniatowska.
