Algo encontrado, algo perdido

As we get ready to rework our show Border Remixeado for our upcoming 2010 tour, a reminder of reality: this was found wrapped around a cellphone in a pile of objects left behind by migrants near Logan’s house in Southeastern Arizona. It reads:

“llege al otro lado le prometo a mis hijas y esposa mucho billete verde gracias dios mio por cuidar mi camino. diciembre 2009 celso ramirez peña †”

“I arrived to the other side I promise to my daughters and my wife lots of green bills thank you my god for protecting my journey. december 2009 celso ramirez peña †“

Ey locos, ¡happy 2010! We rang in the year with a Sonidero Verbobala performance in the historic mining town of Bisbee, Arizona at a city-wide celebration. And then just a few nights later we were in the north of the state for another danceparty in Jerome at the infamous (and haunted) Spirit Room.

We have big things in store for 2010, including a return to the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City in March, followed by a residency and performance at Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americano in San Jose, California. Also look out for installation / performance collaborations in Phoenix and spoken video in Tucson. Keep your eye on the website and our Facebook page for updates as time goes on.

Nueva entrevista con MC Ewor de Sonidero Verbobala

Here’s a new interview with MC Ewor who is the principal MC of Sonidero Verbobala, although as of the moment he’s only been able to play with us at our Mexico City shows. His freestyle and beatbox skills are among the best in the City! He’ll be joining us at the Pasagüero bar this Saturday night in el DF, don’t miss it.

I’m back in Mexico City after five weeks in Colombia and Venezuela; followed by a quick jaunt through Arizona. Here is some video of a solo performance that was part of the 7th Hemispheric Encuentro of Performance & Politics, hosted in Bogotá where I spent most of my time. Mind blowing! These poems are from my new book Arroyo Ink, which just happens to be for sale online.

Digital Poet-in-Residence in NYC

Earlier this year we were asked by the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City to be their second ever digital poets-in-residence. Since performing “Border Remixeado” at the BPC in 2008, we’ve been huge fans of the space and their mission, so we were honored to develop this series of nine videos for them. The videos will be shown on a flat screen TV in the window of the Club (at 308 Bowery) starting this week. If you’re in NYC, please stop by, snap a foto and send it to us!

Qué tal compas,

Well One Water exploded into the world just over a week ago, and it was quite a thing. As always with a project of its size, there was some last-minute stress as details came together, but thanks to the Verbo-familia, we pulled it out: shoutout to Emtron, Nayla, Clau, Michael, Ray, Linn, Kate & everybody who helped out. One of our favorite fotografas, Ariana Perez, was out all the way from San José, CA to document, plus Ray Walker shot the whole thing in HD video. We’ll be posting all that soon. It was beautiful.

But until then, the circus rolls on: we’re in Nuevo México for a string of workshops and performances, the culmination of which is a return to the National Hispanic Cultural Center on July 2. We’re going to be doing a new version of Border Remixeado, don’t miss it if you’re around!

Then, because Flagstaff always likes to dance, Sonidero Verbobala will return to the Green Room on July 4th! We’ll be with our compañeros del ritmo Sambátuque, celebrating independencia all night long. Come celebrate an independent independence day. The Sonidero will also be landing in Tucson on the 10th, more info for that soon.

Last but not least, we’ll be making our San Diego debut in July, thanks to our good friends at Calaca Press. The flyer is below.

El Hijo de la Cumbia

Here’s a show of a good friend of ours who calls himself el Hijo de la Cumbia, he’s straight outta Buenos Aires and is an amazing producer. He opened for Balkan Beat Box and Asian Dub Foundation in the zócalo of Mexico City, Moisés shot the whole thing. Check out the shirt he’s sporting! Chimango, good luck on your European tour!
